Notes:

"The Capital is the greatest of all cities in the Empire. As I have held different municipal offices, for a term of more than 40 years all of its feature are known to me. The following is a brief account of it. The circumferences of the inner and outer walls are together 160 li. There is 13 gates. The inhabitants within the inner walls are all Manchu, and those between the inner & outer walls are all Chinese. The places within the China gate are forbidden grounds, into which no common people are allowed to enter. Each of the other gates is guarded by a prince. Officials or merchants who pass through it, must be searched before they are allowed to enter. The palaces, streets, offices, temples, &c, cannot all be stated, but this map has been carefully drawn according to their situations in this map, the name of the different places have been given in Chinese, and some of them also in English, so that either Chinese or foreigners who have not visited this place, may spread and look at this, as if they had gone through its different parts. The names of the places &c being so numerous, cannot be given in English through want of space, therefore the principal ones only are given."
