Isabella of Valois (?)
- Creator:
- Sanchez Coello, Alonso, ca. 1531-1588
- Date Depicted:
- 1975
1500 AD - 1699 AD - Notes:
- By the mid-sixteenth century the funnel shaped farthingale is firmly established in Spain as the basis of baroque court dress. Its shape is emphasized by strong lines of braid at the center front, shoulder wings, pointed waistline, and hem. This gown has a high-standing collar which is finished with a small separate ruff. The long vertical slash of the oversleeve is typically Spanish. The overall severity is softened by jeweled ties at the shoulder and the rich jewel necklace and matching girdle
