- Emperor Justinian and dignitaries on the left are in the tunica tolaris. The cloaks are the paludamentum carrying the square tablion. The figure third from the right is in a yellow chasuble. The fringed scarf, three fingers wide, is the stole.
- Abstract:
- Essentially Roman is form, Byzantine dress looks totally new. Garments include the kneelength tunica tolaris, the pallium, and the paludamentum, which is now decorated with the tablion. Gradually, through the seventh century, the toga becomes very narrow. Fabrics are rich and brilliant in color. Shoes are soft, without soles, and decorated at the heel and toe.
